A leading authority in quantitative finance and economics, Dr. Jason Hsu is recognized for pioneering research that has reshaped indexing, smart beta, and asset allocation. As Chief Investment Strategist for Sowell Management, he is a champion for advisors—challenging conventional wisdom, advancing best practices, and guiding investors toward better outcomes through evidence-based investing and disciplined decision-making.
In 2016, Jason founded Rayliant, an investment management firm specializing in dynamic asset allocation, systematic ETFs, and alternative strategies. As Chairman & CIO, he leads a team focused on applying cutting-edge research to practical investment solutions across developed and emerging markets.
Previously, he co-founded Research Affiliates and helped develop the Fundamental Index® methodology, a cornerstone of the smart beta movement.
Jason also serves as Chief Economist for East West Bank and is a finance professor at UCLA Anderson School of Management, with visiting roles at Tsinghua University, Kyoto University, and National Chengchi University. He has authored over 40 journal articles, contributed to eight finance handbooks, and earned multiple awards, including two Graham and Dodd Scrolls and three Bernstein Fabozzi/Jacobs Levy Outstanding Research Awards. He holds a PhD in finance from UCLA, an MSc from Stanford, and a BSc from Caltech.
